The Registrant Identification Number

To register a vehicle for use by a corporation or business in Ontario, and get a permit and licence plate, you need a Registrant Identification Number (RIN) for the corporation or business, in lieu of a driver's license.

The RIN is used to identify the corporation or business within Ontario's motor vehicle registration system.

To request the creation of a new RIN for a corporation or business that does not possess one, you need to provide specific pieces of evidence to the Ministry of Transportation through Service Ontario, along with a statement sworn before a Notary Public.

The Notary Public must verify your identity, verify the documents of the corporation or business, and affix a Notarial Seal to your sworn statement.

The RIN Creation Steps

1. Gather the necessary information. The Ministry of Transportation requires your Articles of Incorporation, Business Name Registration, or Master Business License, containing the name and the registered address of your corporation or business. The Ministry also requires two pieces of official mail, such as a corporate tax filing, utility bill, or lease agreement, which must also contain the name and registered address of the corporation or business.

2. Drafting of a sworn statement.

3. Book your Notary Public appointment.  You will be in possession of your duly notarized sworn statement in Adobe PDF form and the original document.

4. Attend at Service Ontario with your notarized sworn statement. Ensure you also have the following with you - the Articles of Incorporation of your corporation or the Business Name Registration of your partnership or the Master Business License of your sole proprietorship, and your two chosen pieces of official mail. Service Ontario will verify these documents, and create a new RIN for your corporation or business. Your may also submit these documents to your car dealership for the acquisition of the RIN on your behalf.
